Next month's
"Future of Work" Conference
The
2nd Asia Pacific Conference on Remote Working will be held in
Brisbane in early September.
If you're already a "virtual worker",
or just thinking about it, it's the ideal place to learn about the
latest ideas and practices of companies running virtual
organizations and virtual teams.
There are two pre-conference workshop
streams - one for managers and one for trainers - followed by the
two-day conference itself.
Particularly interesting will be Dr
John Grundy's presentation on the mistrust of remote workers
(something we mention below) and Judith Monaghan's "Tales of
Telecommuting" based on Queensland Government experiences.
At $1,870 for the two days it's not
cheap - but it's a great investment that can kick-start (or
rejuvenate) your virtual office.
After you've checked out the
conference - talk to us about your Virtual Office ideas.

D-I-Y surgery, and a Virtual Church
The lighter side of Virtual
Working . . .
Like to try open heart surgery?

The ABC science
site makes you the surgeon and takes you step by step through a coronary bypass operation, from pre-op to patient recovery. For
the best effect, make sure your speakers are ON.
You'll have to pay
attention or end up with the message (as I did) "operation
unsuccessful, better call your lawyer".
Test your surgical
skills
here.
Virtual prayer is here . . . but beware the
virtual devils!
1)
Virtual Church
offers sermons, communion, a place to worship, bible search
facilities, a bible quiz and even a kitchen & washroom.
2)The
Church of Fools
goes one step further. Using a 3-D animated character as a
surrogate, you can kneel, pray, sing, and even donate to the
collection plate. The site is sponsored by the UK Methodist
Church and attracts over 5000 worshippers per day.
Nothing's perfect though. For the 3-D bit you'll need
Shockwave Full Installer (from
here), and
the site is occasionally visited by "virtual demons" who harass
worshippers & swear during the sermons.

Roundup
Some items on Virtual Office you might have missed
If you're a
paranoid manager - relax!
(1) The "Getting a Grip on IT" study in NSW
found "going virtual" results in longer working hours,
not shorter ones (that's our overwhelming experience as well).
(2) A study conducted by Cornell University
shows that E-Mail Contains Fewer Lies Than Conversations. According to the
study, only 14% of emails contain lies whereas 27% of
face-to-face meetings are untruthful.
Nevertheless . . .
a survey by
Toshiba Australia showed that over 50% of managers and
over 75% of other employees are less trusting of remote
workers.
Voting via the internet - it's
getting closer
The Swiss conducted the world's first binding
internet vote - in a national referendum .
About 2,720 people in four Geneva suburbs - about one in
five voters in the region who took part in the
referendum - cast their ballots online on issues
including naturalization and maternity leave.
Believe it or not . . . it still took
13 minutes and 5 seconds to count the contents of the
virtual ballot box!
The lightest possible keyboard?

Canesta Inc. has invented a
keyboard made only of light.
A projector beams an image of a keyboard onto any flat
surface, and 3D sensors register when a user's fingertip
touches an individual key.
