AXA Barr Migration

AXA uses Barr's Channel replacement technology to transmit all their Production print from their USA-based mainframe to Australia and New Zealand.  This technology comprises a Barr PC in USA, directly attached to the AXA mainframe by ESCON cable, emulating several printers.  Mainframe print is received and forwarded by the Barr PC to other Barr PCs here in Australia and New Zealand for subsequent local printing.  Backup and Disaster Recovery systems exist at all levels.

When AXA's mainframe migration took place, there was no room for the existing Barr PC as the new site only included space for rack-mounted PCs.  Accordingly, Barr needed to be migrated to new IBM 3650 hardware.  Once the IBM hardware had been received and setup with Barr hardware, Atac was called in to the AXA Melbourne Office to assist the Barr migration.

The challenge was to upload, install, configure and test the Barr product on the new hardware in USA, all via remote control from Melbourne.  The new hardware was so different from the existing Barr PC that cloning technology couldn't do the job; we had to build the new machine from scratch.  Using a combination of Netmeeting and RDP, the existing Barr machine was backed up and the backup was placed on the new machine.

The Barr software was copied up to the new machine, taking around 30 minutes.  The Barr software was then installed remotely, and device manager was checked.  After uninstalling the UNKNOWN adapter, and performing a SCAN for new devices, the Barr ESCON adapter showed up correctly.  It took a remote reboot of the PC before the dongle appeared in Device Manager.

The Barr software started in default mode at this point, and we then restored the settings previously obtained from the Production machine.  Test data flowed through from mainframe->Barr->Remote Barr->printer and was validated as correct later that day.  The following day, AXA began the task of cloning the new Barr PC for Backup and Disaster Recovery purposes.

This solution has been in place for several years now prior to this migration, and with this new hardware we expect it to continue to serve AXA's needs for many years to come.  Barr's Print/Channel product, coupled with a Remote Barr PC with Print390, provides a robust and very cost-effective alternative to IBM's Channel-Extender technology.

To summarise:

  • USA Barr PC Backed up from Melbourne.

  • New USA Barr PC installed, restored and configured from Melbourne.

  • Remote Control testing validated operation and functionality.

It's all part of the service we provide for our valued customers.

Barr Backup Policy

Barr has made some changes to policy relating to Disaster Recovery and Backup systems.  There are now two choices for Barr redundancy.

DR/BACKUP SYSTEM

  • Exactly as it is now for D/R.

  • Pricing is 50% of Production PRODUCT pricing + 100% of ASA.

  • ASA (Maintenance) is renewable annually.

  • It's fully licensed and can be used for testing and remote drill purposes.

SPARE HARDWARE

  • New category of redundancy.

  • Pricing is the same as current Backup Hardware

  • There is no on-going ASA.

  • A 30-day Activation Code is issued if the Production system fails for any reason.

These changes have been made in response to customer requests.  So, you can now choose between a fully functional DR/BACKUP and a "keep it in the cupboard" set of SPARE hardware.

Existing systems are "grandfathered" and will not be changed in any way.

Contact Atac if you have any questions regarding Barr's Backup policy.

Barr Releases Version 5.1.10

Barr has released Version 5.1.10 of its Enterprise Print Server (BEPS).  BEPS 5.1.10 is the first release of BEPS intended for optional use with Barr EOM software.  Barr EOM is the next generation of output and print management software from Barr Systems.  You do not need EOM in order to run BEPS 5.1.10 as a stand-alone print server.

Barr Enterprise Print Server software supports Windows 2003 Server, Windows XP Professional and Windows 2000.  Windows Vista is not supported.

This version includes many enhancements to features in existing components and the addition of new features.  We've also made significant improvements to several areas of the interface that will make the software easier to use and understand.

  • Printing performance has been improved by the removal of extra arrays from SpoolCore and PLC.

  • Multiple '1F' records are now supported.

  • NJE session recovery after a host disruption now does not require a service restart.

  • LPD now caches peer DNS name, which can improve performance with busy networks or DNS servers.

  • Control codes can be contained in banners and sent to the printer.

  • Sentinel installation (Version 7.4.2) is now restricted to just the parallel and USB drivers, without any other programs.

  • Several RJE and NJE connection issues have been connected via SNA and Enterprise Extender.

  • Two new header fields have been added to the Data set header internal custom section for integration with Barr EOM.

Licensed users can download this latest version of BEPS at www.barrcentral.com or contact Atac to arrange a CD shipment.

Q & A

Q.  Exactly what are AFP, PSF & IPDS?

A.  Advanced Function Presentation (AFP) is a Print Description Language (PDL) which is written out by various software applications.  It may contain embedded resources (fonts, images, overlays etc.) or tags indicating where resources are required.  An AFP file may be spooled, copied and transferred electronically in BINARY fashion.  AFP files may also be viewed and indexed/searched with appropriate tools.

IBM's Print Services Facility (PSF) is a program which reads an AFP file from disk and interprets it, gathering resources as required from various libraries.  PSF queries the target device as to whether required resources are already present on the printer and sends them if not.

This two-way conversation between PSF and the target printer is called Intelligent Printer Data Stream (IPDS).  The same AFP file printed twice may produce a different IPDS because the printer may hold resources and not require them the second time around.  As IPDS is a dynamic printstream, it is not possible to spool it to DISK.

Q.  Remote controlling a Windows 2000 machine running BEPS, if we try to add/modify a Barr Port printer, we cannot.  What gives?

A.  Remote control using Remote Desktop Protocol (RDP), even with the "/console" switch, doesn't allow Barr port manipulation on Windows 2000 Workstation or Server.  Use NetMeeting instead, which works fine in this environment.
