BEPS 5 - What is it?

Barr Enterprise Print Server (BEPS) is a Windows-based input/output manager designed to receive data from multiple sources and distribute print and data to multiple destinations.

Our print manager/output manager can help you automate and control your print and document output across your organization.  You can customize the print and output manager to connect to IBM mainframes, AS/400s, TCP/IP hosts and network applications.  In addition, you can select various output modules to connect to high-speed production printers, report distribution systems and electronic storage systems.

BEPS is a print and output manager that provides:

  • Document Distribution - route documents across the building or around the world.  Remote and local print, fax, save to file, save as a PDF and e-mail all your complex documents and forms.

  • Host and Mainframe Printing - integrate your mainframe applications into your corporate network and distribute documents from applications such as SAP, Oracle, Computer Associates etc.

  • Print Spooling and Management - simplifies print and document distribution by centrally managing your output from one location.

  • Production Print Management - helps to ensure that all printers are being used to their maximum potential by recording accounting data for completed print transactions.

  • Print Stream Transformation - converts documents, document batches and spooled print output to practically any format.

  • Data Repurposing - separate, classify, index and convert documents to make it easy to present, print, archive and use your business information.

Contact Atac today to discuss your output management requirements.

StreamTracer - What is it?

StreamTracer is a high-speed print stream comparison application for AFP, Metacode, DJDE, LCDS, PostScript and PDF formats.

In a fraction of the time of manual proofing, StreamTracer compares original and updated versions of a print stream and highlights differences (even ones the human eye can't find) with customizable graphical markers.  Changes are quickly and accurately isolated so you can immediately take the appropriate action.

The main applications of StreamTracer are:

  • Production print quality assurance - Analyse your production print streams to ensure that there are no unexpected differences between versions.

  • Document Composition Software Upgrades or Migrations - Simplify the process of upgrading or migrating document composition software or systems.

StreamTracer:

  • Reduces testing and verification time by replacing manual processes with automation.

  • Expedites the process of upgrading or migrating from one document composition tool to another.

  • Significantly reduces costs associated with correcting errors - such as reprinting, sorting, mailing etc.

  • Reduces labour expenses associated with document quality control.

  • Streamlines your current document quality control process.

  • Virtually eliminates document errors.

  • Creates a completely thorough testing process by allowing you to test every element on every page instead of only a small sample.

  • Ensures that documents are customer-ready by finding errors and changes even the human eye may not find.

  • Provides instant visual identification of all expected and unexpected changes with customizable graphical markers.

  • Supplies a detailed list of specific changes, identifying the attributes that have changed (e.g. position, font resolution, colour) as well as the cause of the change.

  • Allows you to set global and local rules to accept or reject changes.

  • Tracks changes for multiple types of print streams (IBM AFP, Xerox Metacode, DJDE, PDF, PCL and PostScript.

  • Enables instant drag-and-drop acceptance of changes.

  • Allows you to easily see the "before" and "after" with side-by-side comparison.

  • Provides an audit trail by tracking all accepted changes, the approver and the date.

  • Allows you to view changes by category (e.g. image, font resolution, colour).

  • Recognizes colour changes between print streams.

  • Identifies any missing resources prior to comparison.

  • Allows multiple print stream comparisons to be run overnight via batch process.

StreamTracer displays a side-by-side comparison of the test and control docoments.  Through visual markers, you can quickly see differences so that you can determine if they should be accepted or rejected.

Emtex's VIP & VDE - What are they?

Virtual Intelligent Presentation (VIP) provides a comprehensive transform engine that converts all the common PDLs into Emtex's virtual format (VDD) and then outputs to a wide range of printer and electronic formats.  Transforms are text/vector-based and are performed in real-time.

The basic VIP System requires at minimum one input selection, the core system and one output device.

Emtex VIP provides:

  • Production print management

  • High performance output management

  • Electronic document delivery

  • Real-time data stream transformation

  • Centralized control of production

  • Job accounting

. . . for all of the industry's leading data stream formats including IBM AFP, Xerox LCDS, HP PCL and Adobe PostScript & PDF.

Virtual Document Enhance (VDE) from Emtex is powerful print stream re-engineering software that allows users to modify and enhance print-ready documents without the need to change the underlying business applications.  The primary advantage of VDE is the unique combination of a powerful transformation engine with advanced search and replace functionality.

The VIP transform engine first converts all the common PDLs into our Virtual Dynamic Document (VDD) format.  While in the VDD format, VDE performs a set of ACTIONS to modify or enhance the document according to a predefined VDE script.  Scripts are developed using the VDE Development Graphical User Interface.

VDE can process almost any print stream, modify and enhance it and then output an entirely different print stream and/or electronic format (PDF or XML).  VDE Actions are performed in real-time, enabling fast and simultaneous input and output processing.

Q & A

Q.  How do I move data between different versions of BEPS?

A.  It's best to use a file format such as Barr's S/370 format, which has remained unchanged for many years now.  Although the S/370 format doesn't pass all File Properties, these can be passed as segments of a long filename such as FILENAME_CLASS_FORM_DESTINATION_ETC.  The receiving system is setup to receive S/370 format and extract the various filename segments as required.

Q.  What options do I have to read print data into Emtex?

A.  The CONNECT-SPOOL program reads data from polled directories and submits same against job profiles as defined in CONNECT-SPL.CFG.  Options allow you to trigger input processing:

  • when a directory of files appears

  • when a directory has been emptied

  • when a trigger file appears in a directory

  • when <n> files appear

  • when the size of all files reaches a value

  • at regular time periods
