MMUA "partners on show"

The recent Major Mail Users of Australia (MMUA) annual conference provided the first opportunity for Atac and Pitney Bowes to work publically together since the acquisition of Emtex by Pitney earlier this year.

As the Asia Pacific distributor of Emtex, Atac is working closely with Pitney so we can better understand the complete end-to-end problems of our customers.  Seeing "the whole picture" means that Atac can provide better advice to printshops and ensure that our Emtex solutions fit smoothly into day-to-day and downstream operations.

For those who didn't attend the two day conference:-

  • It's still a valuable conference for anyone in the large scale printing/mailing industry.

  • Delegate attendance was down on previous years, but there were still many useful and entertaining presentations.

  • Thanks to all those who took the time to stop and chat to us about their future plans and their current "must solve" issues.

You'll find copies of all the conference presentations here:

Emtex and Streamweaver

Pitney Bowes, who acquired Emtex in February 2006, also own Streamweaver.  During a recent visit to Emtex UK, Atac was appraised fully on the official position with regard to Streamweaver software and its future direction.

Streamweaver and Emtex VDE have overlapping functionality.  Whereas Emtex VDE works in conjunction with Emtex VIP on a PC platform, Streamweaver can be viewed as "VDE for the mainframe" in that it can manipulate and modify a (single) PDL prior to printing.

Ongoing support for Streamweaver will continue and Streamweaver will continue to be sold where there is an overwhelming reason for a mainframe-based product.  However, with Pitney's purchase of Emtex, all development in the printstream transformation and manipulation arena will now be focussed on the Emtex VIP & VDE products.

Upcoming Barr products

At the recent Barr reseller conference in Italy, Barr took the opportunity to pre-announce three new product offerings that will be appearing in the next twelve months:-

  • New print transformation functionality.  Barr will soon offer a whole range of print transformations that work seamlessly with existing Barr spool and transport software.  A large part of this functionality will be based on third-party transformation technology from Compart.

  • PrintStreamComparison software.  A stand-alone product that highlights differences between print files, it comes with a wide range of features including: alignment of documents and pages; screening out of expected/allowable differences etc.  A useful product for a whole range of situations, but particularly useful for verifying print transformations, printstream manipulations and standard test packs.

  • Network Print Spooling.  Barr will be offering a version of its spool and distribution technology specifically tailored to suit environments with either a mixed network and production-printing requirement or just a large network-printing requirement.

For more information about any of the above, please contact David Pattison, Atac's General Manager, who attended the three day event (along with resellers from Spain, France, Belgium, Germany, Italy and the UK and Barr management, marketing and development staff).

Q & A

Q.  The 3.x version of BEPS used to remove the print file's information from next to the BEPS printer after printing had completed.  The 4.x version of BEPS leaves it onscreen, even after the print has finished.  What gives?

A.  The 4.x version of BEPS leaves the last printed file's information alongside each printer, even after printing has completed.  Many users wanted to see what the last file printed was, so this was made the new default behaviour.  It is possible to emulate the prior behaviour, but you need to create a Registry Key to do it.  (If you are unsure of this, ask a Technician to do it for you.)

The required Registry info is:

Key:   HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE/SOFTWARE/Barr Systems/Spool Screen

Entry: SuppressLastDocumentInformation REG_DWORD

Value: 1

This clears the document information when a printer finishes printing a document.  A value of 0 leaves the information onscreen.

Q.  Who is/are Atac?
