Emtex Integrity and Security

Today's PrintShop typically does a lot more than simply printing and distributing customer reports.  It's common for some sort of print data manipulation to take place, such as the addition of barcodes, usage graphs, marketing info and graphics.  Documents are sorted into postal regions for mailing discounts and come out the 'other end' of the PrintShop, with true value added, looking very different from the customer source data.

Many of these enhancements are currently performed by custom written in-house processes which are subject to normal programming 'bugs'.  How then does the customer have confidence in their data making it out the 'other end' with integrity and security?

Emtex VIP software can perform transformations from one PDL to another and Emtex VDE can manipulate the data in any of the ways mentioned above (and more).  This article describes some of the techniques for ensuring data integrity and security when using Emtex.

First off, here are a few worldwide Emtex customers who have no issues with security:

UK Inland Revenue

Hermes Precisa Australia

Goldman Sachs (large investment bank)

UBS Warburgs (large investment bank)

Schroeders (large investment bank)

UK Armed Forces Payroll & Pensions

Lloyds TSB (largest UK bank)

ANZ Bank

Norwich Union (Aviva Insurance Group)

Prudential

Windows itself has plenty of sophisticated internal security.  Windows can be set so that only authorised people can read, write or update certain directories so resource libraries can be protected.  Every customer has their own 'Change Control' system which manages the update of resources on the mainframe or the Emtex Server or both.

Emtex VIP also has security levels which can be applied.  For example, the VIP Server can sit in the secure server room and can only be logged into by a Systems Administrator.  A VIP GUI acting as a print room console for print operators can be restricted so that only the required functions are available and viewable.  This is called a Secure Desktop.

Data can only be changed by using VDE and VDE can only be used by authorised users.  (Data cannot be changed via the VIP system itself, which can only perform transformations.)

Emtex maintains log records of everything which is happening on the system.  Additionally, the Windows file system can provide audit trail tracking when appropriately enabled.

Finally, VDE itself can be used for a special audit trail.  As one example from a large telecom customer, data was extracted from the value of the bills from the print run documents on Input processing.  This data was then used to create an audit report which was printed or viewed before the print run was started.  The report compared figures from a SQL database and if the value of the print run was not equal to this process value, the print run was put on hold by the operators.  A similar process on Output compares values with Input values as well as an external source of information.

The expression 'fully commercial, auditable, change controlled process' is true of Emtex transformation and manipulation.

How secure is your data, and what home-grown processes are currently applied to it as it navigates the PrintShop internal maze?

Barr 4.1.41 Released

Barr has released 4.1.41 of it's Windows Spooling software.  This version includes:

  • 354 Issues added, changed and fixed since 4.0.34.

  • The Operator Console now offers a Find feature so you can easily locate messages.

  • The Backup Configuration Utility now contains an option for backing up and restoring NJE routing tables.

  • The LPR Port Configuration Job tab now contains a Request Control File First option.  This option uses a specialized request to send the control file first command instead of the standard request.

  • The File Port File Options tab now contains a Preserve Extension option.  Selecting this option causes the counter to not replace any extension in the specified file name.  The counter will be added after the extension.

  • An option has been added to the LPR port Advanced tab to save the LPR temporary file.  Saving the temporary file allows for diagnosing data conversion issues.

  • A new Input Status toolbar is available on the Spool Window.  It provides an easy way to determine the status of each Barr Enterprise Print Server input.  To hide or display the toolbar, on the Spool Window menu bar select View | Toolbar | Input Status.

  • A new Enterprise Extender (HPR/IP) communication link has been added to BARR/RJE and BARR/NJE.  This connection option allows the support of SNA applications over ordinary IP networks, while overcoming many of the limitations of DLSw (Data Link Switching).  This allows BARR/RJE or BARR/NJE to connect natively to an IBM mainframe over an IP network without the need for any special routers or gateways.

  • The BARR/PRINT CHANNEL module has been completely redesigned and is now a standalone product.  The new Channel Input Port utility is used to receive documents from BARR/PRINT CHANNEL into the Spool Window.  BARR/PRINT CHANNEL can be installed on the Barr Enterprise Print Server computer or a different computer.

  • On the Spool Window, the printer Restart option has been renamed Reset.  You can find this option by right-clicking a printer or selecting a printer then selecting Printer on the menu bar.  This is typically used to recover from an error state.

  • A new option, Special: Printer Uses Transform, has been added to the Advanced Printer Options dialog box.  Selecting this option allows the transform process to occur while the job is being printed.  Normally, transforms are processed for the entire data set and then printing is started.

  • Barr File Port now contains a new Allow Spaces in File Name option on the File Options tab.  This option allows you to specify how file names that contain spaces will be written, either with the spaces or replacing the spaces with exclamation points (!).  This option is selected by default.

  • Two new input formats are available on the Format tab: Fixed-length record and Delimited record.  For fixed-length records, you can specify the record length and the carriage control.  For delimited records, you can specify the delimiter and the carriage control.

  • You can now select Bypass the Windows Spooler option on the Advanced Printer Options dialog box when submitting files in the Barr file transfer and Barr archive formats.  This will provide more accurate printer status messages in the Spool Window and the Operator Console.

  • When creating a spool printer, a Default option is now available under Code Page on the Advanced Printer Options dialog box.  Selecting this option allows the Barr Enterprise Print Server to select a code page for you.

  • On the Spool Printers tab, you can now specify the retry interval for printers using the LPR port.

  • Files received from BARR/PRINT TCP/IP Socket now have a new naming convention.  When they are received in the Spool Window, the name will be IPxxxx_yyy, where xxxx is the port number the file was received on and yyy is a counter number.

  • The document name in the Spool Window Document list no longer includes the underscore or index number.  The name that displays consists of the job name followed by the data set name (for example, JobnameDatasetname).

Barr/DOS FINAL ASA Renewals

With 2006 drawing near, so is the end of support for the DOS/Barr product.  When Barr introduced their Windows offering, support was promised for the DOS/Barr systems until the end of 2007.  If your renewal falls due next year, you will only be offered ONE MORE ASA RENEWAL before support concludes for this product range.

Over 25 years of development went into the DOS/Barr product, and tens of thousands of systems have been sold worldwide during that time.  This elegant, refined piece of software is still performing a great job at many sites, even though all DOS/Barr development ceased five years ago.

Attractive upgrade paths exist for customers with the DOS/Barr system under ASA.  Credit for ALL your existing DOS/Barr systems will be allowed, to be applied against the purchase of new Windows/Barr replacement systems.

Contact Atac today to discuss your upgrade options.

Q & A

Q.  How do I set the DEFAULT sort order in Barr?

A.  Although you can perform an immediate sort on any column simply by clicking on the column header (once for ascending order, twice for descending), when you turn off this sorting, Barr falls back to a DEFAULT sort sequence.  You can set this sequence by choosing VIEW | SORT ORDER, which invokes a WIZARD to guide you through the process.  Click NEXT to see the current DEFAULT sort sequence, then NEXT again to reach the MULTI-DATASET screen.  If you receive jobs from any source other than NJE, click NEXT; otherwise select the option to group datasets together and click NEXT.  Here the ability to ADD and DELETE items from the DEFAULT sort sequence is provided.  Move desired items into the right-hand column, then move them up and down as required (items sort from top down).  Right-click any item to reverse the direction of the sort, i.e. from ASCENDING to DESCENDING etc.

Finally, click NEXT again to see the final DEFAULT sort definition, and FINISH to make it permanent.
