Emtex Virtualisation Support

With the release of Emtex 8.9.1, VIP has now been validated for production use on Windows Server 2003 SP2 and Server 2008, within the following Virtual Environments:

  • VMWare ESX Server 3.5
  • Microsoft Hyper-V Server 2008
Many customers require the ability to run VIP/VDE in a virtual environment.  However, hardware dongles are not accessible from multiple virtual machines running on a single physical machine.  This release provides support for SafeNet's Sentinel License Management that will enable VIP/VDE to be run in a virtual environment, as it provides a software licensing alternative to the traditional Dongle based licensing solution.

Sentinel License Management uses a separate License Server, located on the same hardware as VIP/VDE, or elsewhere on the local network, to maintain and allocate the various application license codes that have been purchased.  When a controlled application is run, it sends a request to the License Server for a specific license code.  If the required license code has been purchased, the License Server grants a license token to that application and the application will run.  The License Server will grant as many license tokens as have been purchased for that specific license code.

Each installation of VIP/VDE on the network communicates with the License Server to request tokens for each of the licensed applications that need to run.  In this way, a single License Server can distribute the available tokens across more than one VIP/VDE installation on the network.

Note: Traditional VIP/VDE Dongle based licensing is still supported with this release.  The option to install VIP/VDE in either a 'Software Licensing' or 'Dongle Licensing' configuration is provided during the installation.
