Overview
BARR/PRINT AFP is a conversion module of the Barr Enterprise
Print Server that allows you to selectively print fully composed
AFP jobs to any Windows-compatible printer.
Mainframe
printing connectivity is not complete without support for AFP data streams. AFP is an IBM standard print format and the corresponding print data stream
is Intelligent Printer Data Streams (IPDS). The BARR/PRINT AFP module allows
any fully-composed AFP job to be routed through BARR/SPOOL to any set of
destination Windows printers. The document represented by the AFP data
stream will be faithfully rendered on the target printers. Mainframe-based
jobs can be routed and printed to low-cost, LAN-attached printers, or even
high-speed production printers that are compatible with Windows.
A number of
other solutions exist for rendering AFP data streams on low-cost printers. Often, however, these solutions do not process AFP data streams, but instead
process IPDS. The work of translating AFP data falls to PSF on the host.
Unlike these other solutions, the BARR/PRINT AFP module eliminates the need
for PSF because it processes the AFP data stream directly.
Typically, AFP
jobs originate from mainframe-based document composition tools and printing
utilities. They also can be generated by workstation-based utilities.
