Barr Host Communications Suite (BHCS)

Barr are a month or so away from releasing the Barr Host Communications Suite: Barr's RJE/NJE solution for Windows 7/2008.  If all goes as planned with their testing, we should see it released sometime in August.

What is the Barr Host Communications Suite (BHCS)?

The Barr Host Communications Suite (BHCS) replaces the Barr Enterprise Print Server for certain product configurations.  BHCS...

  • allows you to send and receive files to and from IBM mainframes.
  • includes RJE/NJE for one Host Connection and connects to the mainframe using Enterprise Extender.
  • supports both Windows 7 and 2008.
  • has three optional modules that you can buy
    • additional Hosts connectivity
    • LPD
    • PRINT to EPS
  • uses a software key instead of a hardware dongle.
  • supports virtual machine setups.
The BHCS will not...

  • support BARR/PRINT 390.
  • support BARR/PRINT CHANNEL.
  • support SDLC or 802.2 connections to the mainframe (CUSTOMERS WILL NEED TO USE THE EE LINK TO CONNECT TO THE MAINFRAME).
What will happen to BEPS?

Barr will continue to support and maintain BEPS, but it will be limited to Windows XP/2003.  Barr have no plans to update drivers for their channel connectivity hardware.  So, customers with BARR/SYNC, BARR/PRINT390 and BARR/PRINT-CHANNEL will need to stick with BEPS or make some communications/hardware changes before they can move to BHCS.
