Barr FAQs
Q. What has happened to the Barr BHCS solution which will run on Windows 7, Server 2008 etc.?
A. The Barr EOM product has been completely monopolising the Barr developers' time, but recently the developers have completed a large project and are now back working on BHCS. Barr hopes to have BETA software in distributors' hands 1st quarter 2012. Atac hopes to have software available for customer trial 2nd quarter 2012.
Q. The Barr Print/Channel (ESCON) package includes an ESCON-Duplex cable connector, but our z10 mainframe has the newer MT-RJ ESCON connectors. How can you help?
A. Barr has conversion cables with MT-RJ at one end and ESCON-Duplex at the other to assist this transition.
Q. How can I automate a Barr backup?
A. The command line syntax to backup/restore Barr is as follows: BarrConfig {/b /r} <folder name> [config file]
(/b=backup and /r=restore)
This allows you to automate the backup by building a batch file containing an @ (scheduling) command and the backup command line as appropriate.
Q. Can we restore a backup of BEPS configuration from 4.0.34 to 5.1.27?
A. NO, you can only restore from the same version and minor release, so 5.1.16 could restore to 5.1.27 for example. To restore 4.0.34 to 5.1.27, you'd first need to install BEPS 4.0.34, then restore the 4.0.34 backup, then uninstall BEPS 4.0.34 and finally install BEPS 5.1.27. All settings are maintained throughout the uninstall/reinstall so you'll be back up and running in around 30 minutes.
Q. Barr/Web 5.1.4 accepts the Activation Code and runs OK, but needs the Activation Code re-entered every time Barr/Web is started. What gives?
A. The fix for this is to manually place an "Activated_5.1.4.txt" file into C:\Inetpub\wwwroot\BepsWebService\bin, with the contents of nnnnnn=activation_code (where nnnnnn=your dongle ID).
This is a known issue, but it's tough to duplicate since every system seems to be different. Since it's tough to duplicate, it's tough to write a fix for it.
What happens is that the bin folder becomes locked so that the activation code can't be written to it. It either has permissions changed so that the folder is read only or it is locked in another way so that the BEPS WebUI can't write to it.
Q. I cannot seem to ADD a GROUP via Barr's UserRightsConfig tool. I want to be able to manage Print Operators via a Windows Group which has the appropriate rights assigned within Barr.
A. BEPS 5.1.27 is the first version of BEPS in which the UserRightsConfig tool correctly handles Windows Groups as well as Users. UserRightsConfig allows a refined granularity to the granting of permissions within BEPS, with rights to restrict or allow printing, viewing, archiving, restoration and configuration of BEPS itself.
